Star of the Sea Day 2 - Kerrily, Lyn, Suzie and Erin

As part of the whole school approach to Design Thinking, Tuesday is known as 'Discovery Tuesday' from Yr 3-7. This process is very similar to the Inquiry Learning Approach, which many of our schools currently use. The underlying andragogy of this Design Process is the need to include the 3Rs (real life, responsibility and respect) and 3Cs (choice, challenge and collaboration). It is evident that this process reflects our Contemporary Learning Framework of a rich curriculum that promotes success, inspires learners and leads to the development of confident and creative individuals. Because this process is flexible and negotiated it allows for adjustments, as required, for each individual learner.
All the learning environments are stimulating, flexible and intentionally developed to encourage inquiry. Learners can articulate their learning intentions and can confidently state the purpose behind their learning. Each learning space is purposefully designed with adaptive and flexible furnishings that cater for whole class, small group and individual work. Each learning space has a wide variety of ICT, such as iPads, iPods, MacBooks allowing for flexible learning.
The Design Thinking Process must have an impact outside of the classroom and be relevant to real-life situations. Earlier this year, students went to Dreamworld as part of an immersion activity (Engage phase) to find out how Dreamworld ensures sustainability. Students then had to design new ideas to help educate Dreamworld on how they could become even more sustainable.
On Thursday we will have the opportunity to participate in Years 3's "Celebration of Learning Day" as a culmination of their "Festivals of the World" unit.

  1. Thanks northern team. Read with interest. Do you think we need to be more explicit with our own CLF and where it fits in with what we are doing. I was interested in the three Cs and the three Rs and how they seem to be very explicit in the school's work. Look forward to tomorrow and hope the days are full of new ideas. Please start thinking about how you take all this back to your home schools. Who will you be talking to and what will you build on?

  2. Having great deal of difficulty posting on here!!!
    Lyn and ladies,
Really keen to know about the use of data at SOTS- What is the process for gathering data? What is done with the data? Is it published for students? Is the data well utilised in feedback to students? Who is responsible for the data?
    Keep on enjoying yourselves!
